The WaJI Street stock market crash of 1930 almost put an end to the building of one of the most beautiful schooners designed by John J. Alden. H.J. Curtis, who had commissioned the boat, and Edward M. Brown, another member of the NYYC, were ruined. However, thanks to CaJifornian yachtsman, Henry J. Bauer, the construction of Puritan was carried out by the Electric Boat Company in New London, Connecticut. In April 1931, this schooner with centerboard, designed for cruising was able to head for Panama to join the West Coast. With her sheer deck, pronounced overhangs and simple deck design, Puri tan is one of the most elegant yachts from the 1930s. She belonged to the Ferruzzi family for a long time, and although they sold her in 1993, they continue to take much pleasure in chartering her for holidays in the summer. Always well treated by her owners (Bauer had her re-varnished three times a year!), and completely restored in 1991, she still has all her original interiors, including the light pine panelling, matching deck-heads where the visibly bolted beams of steel are lacquered white, and the large white padded leather sofas. This, despite a period where she worked as a patrol ship for the US Navy, to whom she was sold for one dollar in 1941 to help the war effort, as well as a scientific expedition for the American Natural History Museum in 1957 and several years as a charter boat in the Virgin Isles.
